New Delhi (India), February 14: Rajiv Agarwal, a visionary leader with a passion for numbers and a career spanning over three decades, has been at the forefront of transforming various facets of the Indian Insurance Industry. From spearheading innovative solutions for financial risks to leading major international broking firms in India, Rajiv’s journey is a testament to his unwavering commitment to excellence and innovation.
Q1: Can you tell us about your journey in the insurance industry and what drove you to pursue this career path?
Rajiv: My journey in the insurance industry began after completing my B.Tech from the Indian Institute of Technology and MBA in Finance from the US. I was always passionate about numbers and saw immense potential in the insurance sector to drive impactful change. Post-liberalization of the Indian economy, I joined Jardine Insurance Consultant in 1995, where I identified the opportunity to address financial risks and develop comprehensive insurance solutions for the evolving market.
Q2: You have been instrumental in pioneering various initiatives in the insurance sector. Could you share some highlights of your career achievements?
Rajiv: Certainly. One of the significant milestones in my career was when I led the development of comprehensive business risk solutions for the National Stock Exchange and National Securities Depository Limited right at the inception of these monumental institutions which changed the landscape of Indian Securities market. I also spearheaded the expansion of insurance consulting practices for infrastructure projects and benefits consulting.
In 2002, with the regulation of insurance broking by IRDAI, I played a pivotal role in setting up operations for Marsh in India, a leading global broker. Subsequently, I successfully transitioned Willis India’s operations 2006 onwards, despite facing challenges with the Indian JV partner, ensuring continuity and growth for the company.
Q3: What motivated you to co-found Integrated Risk Insurance Brokers Limited (IRIBL), and what are your future plans for the company?
Rajiv: Coming from a business-oriented family, I recognized the potential to capitalize on India’s brand and leverage its growth under initiatives like Digital India and Make in India. I co-founded Integrated Risk Insurance Brokers Limited to create an India Headquartered MNC insurance broking company, providing insurance solutions to the Indian MNCs operating globally. Our company is currently catering to several large corporate houses, Govt. Projects & HNI’s with their overall risk management, insurance solutions & claims consultancy.
We are currently in talks for a partnership with a global investment bank to expand our presence further. My focus is on mentoring the team and driving growth and expansion beyond boundaries.
Q4: What challenges do you foresee in the insurance industry, and how do you plan to overcome them?
Rajiv: The insurance industry is constantly evolving, and with advancements in technology and changing regulatory landscapes, staying ahead of the curve is crucial. We are focused on leveraging technology to streamline processes, enhance customer experiences, and mitigate risks effectively. Additionally, nurturing talent and fostering a culture of innovation are key to overcoming challenges and driving sustainable growth.
Q5: Lastly, what advice would you give to aspiring professionals looking to enter the insurance industry?
Rajiv: My advice would be to embrace change, stay curious, and continuously upgrade your skills. The insurance industry offers diverse opportunities for growth and innovation, and by staying adaptable and forward-thinking, aspiring professionals can make meaningful contributions to the sector’s advancement.
