Mumbai (Maharashtra) [India], August 24: Kalanagar in Bandra East has, for decades, been home to some of the performing arts’ finest names. A neighbourhood woven into the cultural fabric of Mumbai’s artistic history, tracing back to the city’s very first music circle, formed in the 1800s. It is this heritage that Agami Realty sought to honour and revive through Agami Legends, its residential project in the neighbourhood, for which legendary cricketer Sunil Gavaskar serves as brand ambassador.
As part of this vision, Agami Realty brought to Kalanagar the launch of Kehan, a rare literary tribute to the giants of Indian classical music, curated by Sangeet Sabha, one of Mumbai’s oldest and most respected institutions for the promotion of classical music. The evening, themed “The Legacy,” featured a special performance by renowned vocalist Sanjeev Abhyankar, the senior-most living disciple of Pandit Jasraj of the Mewati Gharana, whose music embodied the very spirit of continuity the evening sought to honour.
Kehan is an anthology unlike any other. Over five decades, Sangeet Sabha has had the privilege of hosting stalwarts of Indian classical music: Kishori Amonkar, Kumar Gandharv, Bhimsen Joshi, Mallikarjun Mansoor, Vasantrao Deshpande, Jitendra Abhisheki, C.R. Vyas, Veena Sahasrabuddhe, Prabha Atre, Malini Rajurkar and Manik Verma among them. The book is Sangeet Sabha’s gesture of gratitude to these legends — a dedication crafted in their honour, and one that Agami Realty was proud to help bring to a wider stage.
Each article in the book was written not as a biography, but as a remembrance, penned by an accomplished artist reflecting on the Guru who shaped them. These were not lessons in music alone, but lessons in life, offered by disciples who sat at the feet of masters and carried forward more than technique; they carried forward a parampara, a living tradition passed from Guru to Shishya, from one Gharana to another. It is this transferability, this timelessness, that makes a legacy eternal and as relevant a hundred years from now as it is today.
For Agami Realty, this philosophy extends beyond preserving history; it shapes the very character of every place it builds. Rather than imposing a new identity on a neighbourhood, the endeavour is to amplify the one that already exists. At Agami Eternity, that meant celebrating Kalanagar’s artistic spirit through art and thoughtful curation. With Agami Legends, it became a tribute to the locality’s enduring relationship with cricket through its association with Sunil Gavaskar and the sporting legacy of the precinct. Today, through Sangeet Sabha and Kehan, that journey continues by embracing the neighbourhood’s rich musical heritage, carrying forward yet another chapter of Kalanagar’s cultural identity.
“For Agami Realty, our approach has always been to carry forward the legacy of the locality in everything we build. Agami Eternity was our way of celebrating Kalanagar’s artistic spirit through art and thoughtful curation. With Agami Legends, conceived as a tribute to the legends of Kalanagar, we are celebrating the neighbourhood’s deep connection with cricket through our association with Sunil Gavaskar. And now, through Sangeet Sabha and Kehan, we are embracing another defining part of Kalanagar’s cultural heritage, its rich connection with Indian classical music. Bringing Kehan to this neighbourhood was a natural extension of that philosophy: an evening that did not talk about real estate, but instead let the artists, the music and the memory of the legends speak for themselves,” said Mr. Prashant Khandelwal, Director & CEO, Agami Realty and Joint Secretary, CREDAI MCHI.
Just as Sangeet Sabha has carried forward the mantle of classical music for 50 years, Agami Realty, through Agami Legends, aims to carry forward the mantle of Kalanagar’s own legacy of icons, ensuring that the locality’s art, sport and music continue to shape its future as meaningfully as they have defined its past.
